Harlem Grown
By Tony Hillery
The Story
In a real Harlem neighborhood, a girl named Nevaeh calls an abandoned lot the haunted garden, until a caring man invites the local kids to transform it into a thriving farm.
Why It's Special
For the kid who wants to know if grown-ups can really fix broken things, this is proof that they can, one seed and one shovel at a time.
- Big idea: A neglected space and neglected kids can grow into something else entirely, when someone bothers to show up for both.
- Vibes: Grounded, hopeful, and rooted in real city streets and real dirt under fingernails.
Perfect For Kids Who
- are curious about where food actually comes from
- respond well to true stories about real communities
- like to pore over busy, detailed illustrations
- are working on seeing themselves as helpers who can change things
